TRAGEDY IN AMERICA.
CONNECTIONS AAUTH DOMINION. AVELLINGTON, Sept. 12. Considerable interest was aroused in yesterday in connection with the cabled account of the murder in his garden at Santa Cruz (California) of Mr Joseph Morgan Grace. He was a nephew of tlie late Mr AV. R. Grace, of San Francisco, prominently known in the American shipping world, and said to be related to a family of tlie same name in New Zealand.
This statement, together with the fact that the age of the victim (57 years) coincided, made some people conclude that the murdered man was Mr Morgan Grace, son of the late Hon. Dr. Morgan Stanislaus Grace, C.M.G., M.L.C., who resided for half a century in Hawkestone Street, and a brother of Mesdames lan Duncan, F. G. Datziell, and C. P. AATiite, of AA’ellington.
This was found not to be the case. A relationship, however, does exist. Mr AV. R. Grace, of San Francisco, is an uncle of the ladies mentioned, therefore they and the victim of the crime were cousins. Mr AA r . R. Grace'had other brothers in the United States, and the assumption is that the murdered man was a son of one of them.
Mr Morgan Grace, who was born in the old family residence in Hawkestone Street, left New Zealand more than 30 years ago. after having been in the employ of Levin and Co. for a short time.
