LAMB MARKET STEADY. HOME KILLED SUPPLIES. The lamb market is quietly steady. Consumption is satisfactory, but is now feeling usual competition home-killed lamb. Mutton market: Wethers and ewes meeting with fair demand, with pricos unchanged. Beef market: Quiet. New Zealand porker pigs: Demand improving, but affected by warm weather. Now Zealand baconor pigs: Steady with prices unchanged. Tho above report was received on Saturday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the approximate average prices realised for tho week ended September 8, based on actual transactions of wholesale quantities of tho descriptions of meat mentioned, and are for representative parcels of the goods offering during tho week, being for business done on tho basis of delivered to Smithfield market and/or ex London stores. The Bank of Now Zealand’s produce department lias received tho following advice from its London ofiico as at closo of business last week:—The market for wethers is steady. The market for ewes is quiet and unchanged. Tho demand for lambs is moderate, but prices are firm. There is a better inquiry for beef. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Wellington, are in receipt of a cable message from their head office, dated September 7, reporting on the London sheepskin sales as follows: —There was a good attendance of buyers, selection good, and good general competition, wtih American buyers the principal operators. New Zealand totalling 4641 bales were offered, and practically all sold. As compared with closing rates (July sales): Merino combing wore 12£ per cent higher; halfbred combing, 10 per cent to 15 per cent higher; crossbred combing, all descriptions, 5 por cent to 10 per cent higher; clothing, all descriptions, 15 to 20 per cent higher, except inferior pelted, which were unchanged; lambs, 10 per cent higher. The following is the range of prices realised: —Merino: Threequarter to full-woolled, 9d to 10£d; quarter to half-woolled, 4d to 7 3-4 d; short and shorn, 2£d to 4Ad. Crossbred : Three-quar-ter to full-woolled, line, 7£cl to lid; medium and coarse, 5d to 7£d; quarter lo' half-woolled, fine, 6£d to B£d; medium and coarse, 4|d to 6d; shor-t and shorn, 4£d to 6id; lambs, 5 3-4 d to 9d. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co.,' Ltd., have received the following advice from their London house, dated September 8: Sheepskins: Comb ing and clothing Merino, 10 per cent, to 15 per cent, higher; clothing crossbred, 15 per cent to 20 per cent; combing crossbred, fine 10 per cent., medium and coarse, 7£ per cent higher. Demand keen, catalogues well cleared. LONDON WOOL SALES. NEW SERIES OPEN ON SEPTEMBER 19. A further test of wool values will be afforded next week by the fifth series of London sales, which will open on Tuesday, September. 19, when, it is predicted, there will be a further advance in the prices of all classes of wool. The Bank of New Zealand’s produce, department is advised by its London office, under date September 8, that the prospects for next series are favourable for all classes of wool. It is generally expected that Merino will be l»id to 2d, fine crossbred. Id to and medium and coarse crossbred |d to Id dearer than last sales. The July scries of London sales saw a marked advance in wool values, notably Merinos and other fine sorts, the peak be ing reached during the second week. Although prices did mot close at their highest, there was a very firm tone throughout the scries. Since then substantial advances have been recorded in Australia, and there is no doubt but that next week’s prices in London will show a good rise on those two months ago. There will bo a fairly large offering of New Zealand crossbreds at the coming salce.

WELLINGTON STOCK EXCHANGE. LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES. Reacting to tho improvement in tho pricos of wool," dairy produce, and meat, there was a definitely bettor tone in the stock and share market last week. Trading was very active on tho metropolitan exchanges, business being done in a wido range of securities. Banks and goldmining shares wore tho most favoured, but there was also a good volume of trading in miscellaneous industrials. The market was consistently firm and not a few shares registered advances in prices. Government loans were a firm market with an increased turnover. Tho 4 per cent, bonds, 1940, wore done at £IOO 15s to £lOl 2s 6d. the 1946’s to £lOl 5s and the 1955’s at £IOO 15s. Tho 4 per cent, stocks, 1940, sold to £lOl '7s 6d, the 1949’s to £lOl 10s, and tho 1955’s to £IOO 10s. Marked firmness was shown by tho 3J> por cents., which sold at advanced rates. Local body and other debentures showed improved strength, but trading was restricted. Banks were again heavily traded, mostly at advanced rates. Union of Australia showed a sharp rise, sales being made up to £9 18s. Australasias were firm sellers at £l2 12s 6d and £l3. Now Zcalands sold freely during the week, starting at 48s 4d and closing at 495. The long-term mortgage shares wore dene at 33s 6d. Now South Wales were steady at £32 7s 6d, 2s 6d lower being paid in one case. There was active trading in Commercial of Anstralias at 15s lOd to 16s 2d. E.S. and A. Bank sold at £5 6s 3d to £5 7s. More business than usual was done in National of New Zcalands, which opened at 81s 6d and advanced to 84s. National of Aus tralasia, £lO paid, sold at £l3 Is 6d to £l3 4s, and the £5 paid at £6 7s 6d. The advance in tho wool market was reflected in pastoral shares. Dalgetys rose sharply and sold at £9 15s up to £lO 10s. Golds brough Morts held most of their recent gains and sold at 29s 4d to 29s 6d. N.Z. ; L,oan and MercantUos advanced to business at £52 ss, and National Mortgage A’s were done at /ffis 6d. Gains were registered by N.Z. Guarantee Corporations, which sold at 6s lOd to 7s 3d, the preference changing hands at 225. Insurance shares were very firmly held and business was restricted. South British sold at 71s to 71s 6d, and Now Zcalands advanced from 53s to 53s 6d. A.P.A.’s had a sale at 11s 3d. N.Z. Refrigerating, 10s paid, wore again the most actively traded in the meat section and maintained their strength at 8s lOd to 9s. The £1 paid sold at 18s 9d to 19s 3d. Gear Meats firmed cn sales from 32s 6d to 335. Southlands wore done at 51s for tho fully paid and 25s 3d for the contri- | buting. Canterbury preference sold at £5 10s, and North Canterbury’s at 20s and 19s 9d. Breweries, while less active, were ( very firm, New Zcalands selling at 38s 6d ! to 38s 10jd, Staples at 27s 3d to 28s 9d, Tooth’s at 38s, and Tiinaru, 7s 6d paid, at 1 6s 4d to 6s 9d. A small business was done in coal filming shares, Wostports sell- , ing at 13s, Kaitangatas at 225, and Grey Valley at 14s and 13s 9d. Moro interest was shown in the miscellaneous section, but , sellers were not disposed to make conccssions, and consequently trading was not heavy. Colonial Sugars finned sharply on sales from £57 12s 6d to £SB 10s. Burns, Philp sold at 525, and British Tobacco at up to 355. Improved trading results brought business in Ivaiapoi Woollen, 17s paid, at 7s lOd to 7s lid. Dominion Fertilisers sold at 12s lOd to 13s. Wilson’s Cement sold firmly at 34s 7d, Dunlop Rubber 18s and 18s Id, N.Z. Paper Mills at 28s, .Henry Jones 37s 3d and 37s 4d, Electrolytic Zinc preference 33s 9d and 33s 5d and ordinaries at 23s 3d. Mount Lyells wore steady at 21s 9d to 21s lid. Great activity was seen in gold-mining shares, and a number of issues were heavily traded, notably Bell Hoopers at lid to Is Ojd, 801 l Kilgours at -Is 7d to Is 9jd, casing later to Is Bd, and Gillespie’s Beach at 2s 2d, 2s 3d, 2s 2/d. and 2s Ojd. King Solomons were also very active, sellers’ business opening at 2s lid, and advancing to 3s 3d after the dividend announcement, with a slight easing at the close. Waihis made a sharp rise from 26s 8d to 28s 4d, casing later to 27s 6d. Grand Junctions sold at 4s Id up to 4s 6d, and ; Blackwators at 37s 9d and 375. Matakis were traded at 2s 3d to 2s 6d, and Okaritos rose sharply from 11s lOd to 12s SkiBig Rivers were firm at Is 7jd, Is 9d, and Is Bd. Alexanders, 13s 6d paid, sold at 20s down to 18s 3d and 19s.
