CASE DISMISSED.
ALLEGED FALSE REPRESENTATION. Per Press Association. OAMARU, Sept. 6. Albert James Birclifield was charged at the Police Court yesterday with obtaining £7 from the Public Works Department at the Waitaki hydroelectric works by falsely representing that he was injured by a truck on May 16.
The police produced a letter written by accused stating that he received the injury in a football match on May 14 and not by a truck. The defence was that accused wrote the letter in a spirit of' bravado. A witness, J. Erewen, gave evidence that the injury was received as the result of a truck accident. Accused gave evidence that he was at present serving a sentence for the publication of seditious literature as ■a member of the Communist Party. In an endeavour to make the department look silly he had written damaging statements about himself. Sergeant Eearnley: Making yourself a cheapjack hero. Accused: Yes.
The Magistrate dismissed the case, saying the offence was not substantially proved.
