CRIME IN INDIA.
MAGISTRATE’S DEATH
CALCUTTA, Sept. 2. While stepping into a car in football dress to take part in a match for the Midnapore Club against a Mohammedan team, Mr B. E. J. Burge, the Midnapore Magistrate, was shot dead by a fusillade of bullets fired by a party of Bengalis, within sight of his wife. Police officials opened fire and one terrorist was shot dead and another seriously wounded; a third was arrested.
Mr Burge was a prominent sportsman and was greatly esteemed. Acute indignation prevails over the outrage. MILITARY HONOURS.
THIRD MAGISTERIAL VICTIM. Received September 4, 10 a.m. CALCUTTA, Sept. 3. At Midnapore a wounded suspect died this afternoon. Twenty-five arrests were made during a round ►up. Mr Burge’s funeral was a mile long and he was buried with military honours alongside Mr Peddie, the Midnapore Magistrate who was murdered in 1931.
Mr Burge is the third _ District Magistrate to be murdered in three years.
