WEST AUSTRALIA
THE SECESSION ISSUE. REJECTION ANTICIPATED. CONFERENCE OF’ STATES. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received June 14, 9.35 a.m. AIELBOURNE, June 14. The Commonwealth Government has abandoned for the time being its proposal to hold a Constitution Convention. AVheu the question was discussed at the Premiers’ Conference only Tasmania and South Australia supported the Commonwealth’s plan. The other States supported the proposal by Hon. B. S. B. Stevens that, before the Convention was held, a conference of Premiers should deal with the existing difficulties and, in effect, carry out useful preparatory work. It was agreed that the conference be held early in 1934. The Premier of AYestern Australia, Hon. P. Collier, indicated that he would submit the case for the separation of AYestern Australia from the Commonwealth to the Imperial authorities. Air Collier implied the rejection of the ease for secession by adding that, after a decision was reached, he was prepared to participate in any conference with the other States and later join in the Constitution Convention.
