NATIONAL DAIRY SHOW

OPENING OP EXHIBITION DISTRICT ENTERPRISE EXEMPLIFIED ALLOCATION OF AWARDS The 31st National Dairy Show conducted by the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association opened at Palmerston North to-day in dull and threatening weather, but there were expectations of a large attendance of the public. More than a mere exposition of the fertility of the soil and the enterprise of manufacturers, the Show mirrors the progressive spirit of the Manawatu district. The Show has grown into a national institution, with a merit and solidarity recognised throughout the Dominion, and on this occasion it even transcends the former high standards attained.

The big winter exhibition will extend over four days, with evening sessions, and terminates on Saturday night. The Show epitomises the real wealth of the province and emphasises its great agricultural, industrial and commercial potentialities. It is the forum for discussions which have as their objective the mutual advancement of rural and urban interests, and the strengthening of the link between them. It is the home of farming achievement, pride in approved agricultural practice, and the market place for commercial enterprise. It is symbolical of productivity, stability and hard work, and, although a brief educational feature, has a permanently instructive'effect. The present fixture worthily upholds the prestige of the A. and P. Association. It is a distinct credit to the organisation of the president (Mr D. Buchanan), the secretary (Mr W. T. Penny), and the enthusiastic general committee. Coincident with the major fixture, the Manawatu Poultry Association’s Show, for which there are Large entries, is being held, and seven North Island championships are being competed for by strong classes. The exhibition by the Manawatu Society of Arts is being conducted continuously in the entertainment hall. ■ Judging of all classes in the Show, with the exception of a few competitions, was in progress to-day, and breeders’ organisations were bolding their annual meetings. This evening the Manawatu Boxing Association is conducting a tournament in the Stadium. The North Island sheep dog trial show ring championship was in progress on the oval this morning, and will be concluded to-morrow.

2 p.m.—Annual meeting New Zealand Friesian Association. Annual meeting New Zealand Orpington Club. 3 p.m. —Rugby football, Massey College v. Victoria College. 5 p.m.-7 p.m. —Show closed 7.15 p.m. —Manawatu Wrestling Association’s tournament in the Stadium. 7.30 p.m.—Annual meeting Clydesdale Horse Society. 10 p.m. —Show closes. JUDGE’S COMMENT. COOKERY DIVISION. Commenting upon the cookery classes which she judged in the home industries division, Mrs D. Buchanan, of Tiakitahuna, stated that though the number of entries was not large, the quality was very good, that in the classes for electric cooking being outstanding. The cooking by tlie children was remarkably good, and on the whole the classes were of a very high standard.

STRONG DAIRY PRODUCE SECTION.

Larger entries have strengthened the dairy produce section this year, the butter entries numbering 226 and those for cheese 239. This is a very gratifying feature. The entries in the fat stock section, including cattle, sheep and lambs, number 87, and m school displays, including forestry, 131. Exhibits in the farm products, field roots, vegetables, fruit, honey and bacon sections make the big total of 744, those for home industries and preserves 221, and for art needlework 206. Double the number of last year’s entries have been received for the frozen lamb competition. The models section is a new and attractive feature, while interest will centre round the photography. Altogether the entries number 2353, which is considered very satisfactory in view of the recent reduction in prize moneys, and also the general difficulties so common to these times. A CONVINCING DISPLAY. The produce hall houses a convincing display, the paramount feature being the long, attractive benches of butter and cheese. The Mana-watu-Oroua branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders ’Association is responsible for an instructive display of numerous sides of cured bacon, demonstrating the requirements of the trade. The appearance of the collection of vegetables from “Pukemarama.,” Mr J. F. AlcKelvie’s home at Carnarvon, is almost traditional, and reveals the scope to be exploited in tho domestic garden. Honey and beautiful apples, tastefully arranged, add to the attractiveness of the hall, the display in which is completed by the needlework and home industries sections. The former of these includes some very fine articles. The industrial halls are well filled and include several new and novel exhibits, indicating the steady expansion in the manufacturing held. Ihere is the customary amusement area on the grounds, and it is well occupied with stalls and mechanical devices. The models section, under the stewardship of Messrs D. Dickie (senior), B Hobday and A. Barsanti, is accommodated at the end of the lndiistrial halls, and has some outstanding exhibits in mechanical ingenuity. A splendid full-rigged yacht, a picture of grace, is shown by Mr A. Barsanti, and there is an interesting petrol engine made by Mr G. Buglass. who has also a model lathe on view An old-time beam engine is exhibited by Mr J. Dean, aged 80 years, of Dannevirke. He makes his own patterns and castings and does all his work on an old wooden turning Lathe. Messrs F. C. Ward and A. C. Laker, of Palmerston North, are showing a shaping machine, while Mr Ward has also a vertical marine engine with reverse gears. There are some striking working models of railway engines. The Palmerston North Model Engineering Society is responsible for these fine exhibits. „ , , ‘ . „ Model ’planes of all types and sizes, in various stages of construction, and representing some well-known machines, are shown m an adjoining exhibit of great interest by the Palmer«dnn North Hornet Aero Club. , The Jubilee Institute for the Blind •ic fol'owing its usual custom of exhibiting the handcraft of its trainees, Q work which has lieen carried on * in " its establishment in 1890. Vocational training for the blind is the main feature of the work of the institute finite anart from its general educational activities. Every endeavour is made to make the blind independent, so that they may find happiness in earning their own livelihood. The New Zealand Women’s Institute has an interesting display of work in the produce hall, particularly de--trative of the utilisation of waste products The Plunket Society.'. ?oom. with its welcome facilities, is also available for mothers.
