ANZAC OBSERVANCE.
SERVICES AT SCHOOLS. ' The College Street School Committee last evening reviewed the position in regard to the Anzac Day service at the school. In the past, a ceremony had been held during the week, but on this occasion an experiment had been made by conducting a service at 9 a.m. on Anzac Day. Mr AV. A. Swinbourn, the headmaster, stated that about 285 children had attended the service out of a roll of 432.
Colonel J. H. AVhyte, the chairman, in pointing out that this was not much more than half of the roll, said that, though the response was not bad, it was not as satisfactory as could be desired.
Mr I. E. Griffiths said that the Scout ceremony would probably attract some of the children, but Mr Swinbourn stated that provision had been made for these to attend both services.
“AA r e will leave the matter alone in the meantime,” said Colonel AA’hyte. “Next time, I think, we should hold some ceremony on the eve of the day.” He added that it was essential that all of the children should be given the opportunity of learning the vital piece of history which Anzac Day represented.
DISCUSSION BY R.S.A
The opinion was expressed by Air C. A r oss, at last night’s meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the R.S.A., that Anzac Day should be observed in the schools by the holding of their services on the day itself. Mr B. J. Jacobs said that, this year, all the primary schools had held their services on Anzac Day, but the position was somewhat different in the secondary schools owing to many of the pupils coming from the country. For this reason it had been deemed preferable to hold the Anzac Day services at the secondary schools prior to the day itself.
