HOROWHENUA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

OTAKI, May 8.

Mr E. Lyne was yesterday taken to the Palmerston North hospital for treatment. Miss E. Oldbury-Jones, at one time a resident of Otaki, and now of Wellington, is spending a holiday at Waikanae. Messrs Chaney, Flutey and McDonald, who went in search of the hampers a week ago, returned homo last evening, after journeying to the north of Mt. Crawford. During their absence from Otaki they encountered very rough weather, but are convinced that had they started out earlier they would have located the missing party. The trio, ail of whom are experienced bushmen, did not know that the trainpers had been found till they returned home. The first of a series of euchre tournaments in connection with the Otaki Fire Brigade was held on Wednesday night when, despite heavy rain and the elections, there was a good attendance. Keen games resulted. Winners were: Mrs Denton and Mr W. Bills, first prizes; and Mrs R. Bills and Mr C, Cooksley, second awards. Supper was served. Miss Keitha Synnott has left for Auckland, whore she will spend a holiday. Mrs Royal left yesterday on a motor tour of the north.

As the result., of a shop day for the benefit of the relief of distress on Saturday the sum of £9 15s was raised. Those in charge were Mrs Johnson, Mr and Mrs Egdell, and Mr W. Blackmore. The- Otaki A.A. and C. Club held a dance on P'riday evening which proved enjoyable, although the attendance, due to the inclement weather, _ was not large. Brizes, in the form of diver cups, were awarded J. Nicolson, points prize for running, W. Beauchamp second, M. Noble first for points prize in cycling, Bert Coulter second.

An attempt was made at an early hour on Saturday morning to open Messrs Bills Bros.’ safe,'an explosive being used. The attempt, however, proved futile, and nothing was taken.
