POSITION OF JAPAN. PREPARED TO DEFEND. LONDON, May 6! Interviewed at Dairen, Marshal Muto, the Japaneso Commander-in-Chief in Manchuria., scouted the idea of war with Russia. He said that Japan’s hands were full with agricultural, industrial and transport improvements. “But if Russia takes a wrong direction, or anyone interferes with the creation of this important base for peace in Asia,” he said, “we are prepared to defend our rights.” THE TROUBLOUS RAILWAY. OFFER TO SELL? TOKIO, May 6. It is reported at Kobe that the Russians have offered to sell the Chinese Eastern Railway. Further discussions are expected.
