It was forty years ago on Monday last since Mr 11. Pinhey introduced the first four-wheeler cab to Masterton. Fifteen members of the Manawatu Tramping Club, half of whom were ladies, joined the members of the Tarartia Tramping Club at Yvellington yesterday and spent the day rock climbing at Titahi Bay. A thunderstorm at Auckland during the week-end resulted in the blowing out of a number of telephone fuses. Over 250 instruments were put out of action in Mount Eden district alone. Much damage to wireless sets is also reported. A pleasing programme was presented to the inmates of the Hospital yesterday afternoon by the Palmerston North City Band. The enthusiastic reception accorded every selection left no doubt as to the popularity of the entertainment.

It is reported that some of the pheasants which were recently liberated in the Ivowai riverbed, Canterbury, are finding their way to the fowiyards of the residents in the district and do not object to being handled. The New Zealand Tablet, the pioneer Roman Catholic paper in New Zealand, celebrated its diamond jubilee last week. The paper was founded on May 3, 1873, by Dr. Moran, the first Roman Catholic Bishop of Dunedin.

Endorsement of the proposal to repair the Bulls bridge over the Uangitikei River so as to ensure its life for five years, and to commence the erection of river protection work with a view to shortening the length of a new bridge, was agreed upon by the Rangitikei County Council last week. After a number of experiments, lasting over three years, the use of pulverised coal as a fuel has been brought to a satisfactory working stage on the steamer Hororata, which is at present at Auckland. All the vessel's six boilers are now fired with this fuel, which is crushed by special mills in the stokehold. A rude shock was received by a woman sitting in the front room of a house in Newmarket, Auckland, when a heavy motor truck suddenly crashed through the picket fence and halted beneath the verandah and within two feet of the house. The accident was due to the steering gear of the vehicle suddenly failing.

A Christchurch solicitor received advice by mail recently of the sale by auction of 14 properties in an English estate in which a client was interested as a beneficiary. As these are situated in the North of England, which has been affected by stagnation of trade much more than in the south, the solicitor had prepared his client for a sale much below values assessed for estate duty purposes. To his surprise, prices realised were 23 per cent, above the valuations, which suggests that the outlook in England is improving (says an exchange).

Full prominence was given to the question of the amalgamation of counties at a sitting of the No. 10 Highways Council in Masterton. Although there appeared to be no general desire for amalgamation, several county representatives favoured the proposal provided it would result in economy. Other representatives were of the opinion that the back country settlers would suffer through not receiving the consideration and service they deserved. After a lengthy discussion a motion was passed to the'effect that the council was not opposed to amalgamation provided it ecu id be shown that it would be for the benefit of the district.
