EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AIAY 8, 1903.

Mr Joseph Chamberlain, in a speech which elicited warm commendation from both sides of the House of Commons, explained tho resolution guaranteeing the development loans of £35,000,000 which were asked for South Africa, conditional upon a war contribution of £30,000,000. The latter was to be derived from a future loan secured on the Transvaal’s resources and the realisation of her enormous potential resources. The bulk of the loan would be devoted to the discharge of existing liabilities, the development of transport facilities, irrigation, and land settlement. Turkey insisted on the withdrawal of the Bulgarian Bishop from Macedonia and the recall of Bulgarian commercial agents from Monastir. The latter were accused of complicity in. the revolution. The New York Sun protested against Russia’s “shameless mendacity” over the Manchuria question and heartily supported Anglo-American friendship. At the Marylehono Cricket meeting 215 voted in favour of widening the wickets and 299 against. Mr Arthur Balfour’s motor-driver was thrice fined for scorching when the Premier wns in the car. Tho Liberal Press condemned Mr Balfour’s repeated breaches of a law of his own making. The secretary of the Palmerston North Hospital, Mr W. Rutherfurd, received a donation of £l7 from Hunterville for assistance of troopers wounded in South Africa. As there were no such cases requiring assistance in the district the money was divided equally between Palmerston North and Wanganui hospitals.
