CENTRAL RELIEF COMMITTEE

A meeting of the general committee of the Palmerston North Central lielief Committee was held yesterday. There were present: The Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford) in the chair, Messrs P. Larcomb (treasurer), ( K. (J. Chamberlain (secretary), J. C. Young, W. R. Kells and Rev. Father Herlihy; Mesdames Mansford, Abraham, Flood, Haywood and Trask. Apologies were tendered on behalf of Mesdames Shaw and Aitehison, Rev. C. S. Matthews, Rev. G. T. Brown and Mr A. A. Langley. A report was tabled showing that applicants at the food depot were increasing daily until this week, when the number of families being assisted totalled 255. The pound parcel scheme was not being well supported, but many contributions from farmers and citizens by way of fruit . and vegetables had been received. The city garden had also contributed a large supply of vegetables. The wood depot had opened on May 1 and deliveries of wood had commenced. 1

It was reported that so far between 70 and 80 citizens were contributing one shilling weekly and it was hoped that this number could be increased to 500 weekly. The chairman advised the committee of the concert arranged bv Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., for Sunday night in the Opera House in aid of the funds. The offer of the Wellington Artillery Band to present concerts on a. date or dates to be arranged, tile committee to receive half the net proceeds, was accepted. It was reported that upwards of 5000 roses had been made for the Mother’s Dai;sales in aid of the funds for the clothing of the women in the city. Other concerts have been promised by va.rious church choirs to be held later. The damaged propeller of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s Southern Cross had been donated to the committee and later an announcement will be made as to its method of disposal. The propeller was donated by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who expressed the wish that it be disposed of for a charitable purpose of some kind.
