THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” APRIL 12, 1903.

Sir Malcolm McEachem . had succeeded in forming a company, in England with a capital of £650,000 for tho construction of 28 miles of electric tramways to Tokio. He declared that there was a much better prospect of trade with Japan and Australia, especially in wool, ns the Japanese army were being clothed in wodllens.

An agreement had been concluded between England, France and Germany arranging for joint control of the proposed Bagdad railway, the Turkish Customs Department guaranteeing the revenue. Three English directors had been chosen.

A message from Paris stated that M. Lednudy, the French aeronaut; in his airship balloon reached a height of 900 feet, and maintained a speed of 25 miles per hour. The Parisians contrasted King Edward’s official visit to Paris with Queen Victoria’s abstention since the Ropublic was proclaimed. The newspapers suggested that King Edward was influenced by more than personal sympathy, and was determined to revive old traditions of national friendships. In the Manawatu v. Wellington cricket match, Wellington won by an innings and 162 runs. Russia was to increase her Far Eastern naval squadron to nine battleships, eleven large and eight small cruisers, and 41 torpedo vessels, with three admirals, 823 officers and 15,571 men.
