WANGANUI PRESBYTERY

AIEETIXG AT AIARTOX. I The bi-monthly meeting of the AA’ani ganui Presbytery was held in Alarj ton yesterday. Rev. L. G. B. j Whitehead, the moderator, occupied I the chair and constituted the meeting. There was a large attendance of ministers and elders. Elders’ commissions were received in favour of Alessrs D. Fordell ; AA . J. Cooper. AAestinere ; Humphrey, St. James, AA’angamii: G. Bartholomew, Feikling. The new elders were welcomed bv the moderator. ft was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Rev. J. Paterson in his present state of ill-health. Air Osborne, representing the AVelliiigton Presbyterian Orphanage, spoke briefly to the presbytery upon tire work of the orphanage and the means of collecting within the bounds of tbe presbytery. Communications from the general treasurer were received concerning the matter of the budget for the following year. A committee consisting of Revs. D. Raeburn AlcDonald, G. T. Brown and I). Afdvor (convener) was set up to call a Presbyterian Conference in ATav to discuss the whole question of the budget and relative matters.

Alembers were strongly urged to utilise the privileges that were already granted for Bible teaching in the school. Air J. Aitkcn pointed out that under the 'Wanganui Education Hoard valuable opportunities were given, and if they were taken advantage of it was as much as they could expect. Rev. C. AA'all moved: “That while we express sympathy with the Nelson system we let the public know that we affirm our allegiance to the Bible in Schools League.” This was carried. Rev. G. T. Brown reported that, as a result of representations that had been made to him and some others j at the Assembly in AA'nnganui, lie had I moved to have the status of employed j deaconesses and their relationship to | the various courts of the Church dej fined. He had asked the Assembly to I instruct the advisory board to take I this matter in hand, but the Assembly had referred the matter to the AA'aiiganui Presbytery with himself as convener. He now asked that a committee of the presbytery, consisting of tlie Palmerston North ministers and presbytery ciders, lie appointed to deal with this matter and report. This was agreed to. Rev. D. C. Herron, the convener of the theological committee, wrote urging upon the presbytery the desirability of being careful in tiie selection of candidates for the ministry. It was exceedingly difficult, after a student bad been selected and chosen, to arrest him in mid-course even although it was felt that he was unsuitable. Rev. G. T. Brown stressed the importance of this matter and moved that a committee be set up to confer with each candidate and to investigate his fitness before he should be accepted by the presbytery. Eventually a committee consisting of Revs. G. King (convener), G. T. Brown. L. Kerr and L. AVilkinson was appointed for this purpose.
