GALA DAY

AT TECHNICAL SCHOOL. Although the new assembly hull has not been completed, the contractors were sufficiently tar advanced to-day to permit of the Technical School's gala day to be held therein. The function was declared open by the chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr W. L. Eitzherbert. Prior to to-day parents, old pupils and supporters'of the school had been busily engaged in erecting stalls in the interior of the new building and in collecting goods of all descriptions, the result being that the public, who wore present in appreciable numbers, were offered a wide range of goods. In calling upon Mr Eitzherbert to open the gala, the director of the Technical School, Mr G. G. Hancox, took the opportunity to announce that the badge selling competition had resulted in a narrow win by one-shilling for the Tainui Club, the individual collections being declared as follow. —Tainui £7 2s 6d, Ngapuhi £7 Is Od, Arawa £6 9s, Rangitane £o Is bd, making a total of £2G 9s. In expressing his pleasure at being among them, Mr Eitzherbert stated that he first wished to thank the contractors for making it possible for the gala day to be held in the bunding and also the electricians for expediting the lighting arrangements. He also thanked the public-spirited citizens who had attended to assist the school in its objective. As there was to he a public function held at a later date to mark the opening of the assembly hall, he did not intend to touch upon that matter save to say that all would agree that it was a handsome structure which would stand as a monument for many years hence. However, the school and the Board of Governors owed a debt of gratitude to Mr Hancox for making at possible to have the assembly hall erected, for the director had saved money in every direction possible. As a result of the director’s efforts £ISOO had been raised and, as it was not quite sufficient to carry out the full programme determined upon, the gala day had been launched. The speaker concluded by expressing the hone that ali the pupils realised the school’s true worth, for it was not every child that received such opportunities as a technical education.

Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., a member of the board of governors, stated that he felt it opportune to give those present some information concerning the chairman of the board. He personally had been associated with technical education for 23 years, and he could not speak in other than the highest of terms of Mr Fitzherbert in his official capacity. Twelve months ago Mr Fitzherbert had rendered such splendid service as chairman that the committee were unanimous in persuading him to a.gain take office. The speaker called on the pupils to show their appreciation for wliat had been done for them by the chairman of the board of governors and by their school director, three hearty cheers being given to each gentlemen in response to the call. The stalls, which were gaily decorated in multi-coloured streamers and crepe paper, were conducted as under:—Produce, Mesdames T. Ellery (convener), J. Itowntree, L. Connop, and Mr A. J. Newman.
