RIVER BOARD.
INSPECTION OF WORKS. BENEFIT OF PROTECTION. Members of the Palmerston North River Board, in company with the engineer, Mr E. Fisher, to-day made an inspection of the complete length of the board’s operations along both sides of tlie Manawatu River from a point near Aokautere to tlie old racecourse at tho end of Botanical ltoad. General satisfaction was expressed at the success being achieved with the protective works. * The chairman of thq board (Mr A. E. Mans ford) stated that the benefits were very evident, particularly from the latest groyne erected at the old racecourse, while steady reclamation was proceeding at Fitzroy Bend and serious erosion was being arrested at Mcßae’s Bend. Tire chairman added that, on the whole, very good protective work had been done. Proposed works to be included in the estimates for the coming year were discussed during the tour. These include suggested additional groynes near Mr Gosling’s property on the Aokautere side, at Fitzroy Bend, and at the old racecourse, as well ns the extension of existing groynes in various places, one being at Mcßae’s Bend.
