TAX ON EXPORTS.
NOT CONSIDERED SUITABLE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7 . The Government has carefully considered the question,- but it does not consider the imposition of an export tax advisable, said Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in the House of Representatives, when replying to a question by Mr J. Hargest. It was suggested by Mr Hargest that the Minister, in introducing his taxation proposals, should consider the incorporation of an export tax of at least 2 per cent, on all produce exported from New Zealand.
As the exporting industries had obtained definite relief anjpunting to 25 per cent., Mr Hargest considered they should not object to the imposition of a levy the proceeds from which would partially reimburse the Treasury for any possible loss the indemnity to the banks might cause. City dwellers could reasonably expect the exporter to stand his share of the inevitable taxation.
