Questioned as to the possibility of reopening negotiations with the new Irish Free State Government upon the land annuities and other questions jn dispute, Air J. H. Thomas said the United Kingdom Government was desirous of a friendly settlement provided that it proceeds on the basis of acceptance of the validity of the existing obligations. ANGLO-PERSIAN NEGOTIATIONS. Sir John Simon said that as the result of the good offices of Dr. Benes (Czecho-Slovakia) arrangements had been reached, and confirmed by the League Council whereby the AngloPersian Old Company was about to enter into direct negotiations with the Persian Government. If these failed to produce an agreement the question could again come before the Council for decision. It had been further agreed that during the negotiations, and until a final settlement is reached, the work of the Anglo-Persian Company should continue to be carried •on as it was carried on before the Persian Government claimed to cancel the concession.

LIBERAL PARTY. CONFIDENCE IN SIR HERBERT SAAIUEL. Received February 8, 11 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 7. The Liberal Parliamentary Party defeated Major H. L. Nathan’s motion that the Liberals cross the floor of the House and carried an amendment expressing confidence in Sir Herbert Samuels leadership of them as a free and independent party. Alajor Nathan will sit with the Opposition.
