GARRISON BAND.

JUNIOR COMBINATION’S SUCCESS. In carrying off the first prize money in both the 0 grade quickstejr and own selection at the Napier contest, the junior combination .of the Palmerston North Garrison Band put up a meritorious performance. The adjudicator, Mr Thomas Goodall, of Wellington, in making his award, stated that a surprise packet had been uncovered in the playing of the winning C grade band, the Palmerston North Garrison, whom lie would award 82 points, a point higher than the winning B grade band. The result achieved was a tribute to the assiduous preparation of the members, the. majority of whom are boys, and to the conductor, Mr C. Pdce, in scoring with a band whose soloists even were lacking in previous contest experience. Both the bandsmen and Mr Pike state ! that in no small measure were the results obtained due to the efficient and j genial management of Mr F. J. Oakley on the trip. Appended are the judge’s i notes on the test selection, “Knight Errant” : Andante.—Good solid opening ; nice cornet ;■ band good; accompaniments nice; euphoniums good; everything. going well. Good bass end, very com- j puct; cornet playing very nice. Cadence , good, finish nice. Tempo de marcia : | Good firm style depicted here, but not I kept up all the way. j Mr Goodall described various parts as I very good, the whole being a really good | movement. Andantino: Fine entry, the j band being well controlled. Euphonium j very safe with good tone. Andante f Not ; quite together at the start, but very j nice after and a nice c’ose. Allegro i vivace: A good opening with clear work j all round, showing good training. Very, good and good tone and fine finish. A first-class performance, worthy of any B grade band. |
