RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”) Silver Scorn is reported to have been doing- a. bit of sprinting at Riecarton in preparation for the Dunedin meeting. Berate, the stable companion of Silver Scorn, has had littlo asked of her of late. Both claim Silverado as their sire. A. H. Eastwood intended being in attendance at the Takapuna meeting, but ho had to cancel tho trip owing to tho illness o,f his wife. J. T. Jamieson did not take tho yearlings ho purchased at tho Trentham sales with him on his return to Australia. They are to bo broken in and are to remain in tho Dominion for a few months. A gelding by Masterpioco from a Bay Chief mare has gone into J. B. Pearson’s stable at Riecarton. Tho newcomer is a brother to that brilliant ’chaser Lord Ranald, so it is probablo ho will be found among the jumpers. A short spell has boon ordered for East Passage, who is suffering from a splint. Sho has been blistered and is now having a rest. Her period of idleness will last for a few weeks, after which she may be got ready for tho Groat Autumn Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting. For a time there appeared to bo a prospect of La Poupco recovering tho brilliant form that placed her second on the winning two-year-old list—only Ammon Ra being ahead of Her—but she has lately repeatedly failed at all distances. On tho final day at Trentham oho was almost tho outsider of tho field and she ran accordingly. Miladi’s success .in tho Thorndon Handicap on tho final day at Trentham was her first attempt over a mile. She was a very brilliant filly in tho early stages of her sprint races originally, but she now requires to settle down, her best work being done in tho closing stages. On two occasions she has won at seven furlongs. There is every prospect of a really good field contesting tho Taranaki • Stakes on February 11, according to information from New Plymouth. Present indications point to at least six or seven horses going to tho post and if this proves to be tho case the club will bo amply rewarded for retaining the classic event on its programme. It is a wonderful feat for a trainer to turn out a thousand winners during his turf career. This total lias been exceeded by tho English trainer George Poole, who led in his eleven hundredth winner when a horse from his stable won the Novice Steeplechase at Gatwick last month. Poole’s total includes winners on the flat and in hurdle and steeplechase contests; He also has the distinction of training winners in Ireland, Belgium and France. Cleaner, an appropriately named filly by Lord Qucx from Charlady, won the Cambrian Handicap, -six furlongs, at the Vincent meeting. This filly is the first of Charlady’s progeny to race, and is reported to bo a smart galloper and one likely to do much better. Her dam, Charlady, by Absurd from Lady D., who did tho bulk of her racing in the Auckland district, was at one time attached to J. Williamson’s stable at Ellcrslic. Cleaner raced in tho colours of Mr J. M. Samson, of Dunedin.

Bramblctorn registered his best performance this season when lie led the field home in tho Ashhurst Cup, thus recording his fourth success since the spring. The son of The Ace has been racing very consistently during tho last month, having notched three wins in his last four starts. Ho is trained by D. Moroney at Hastings and is a full-brother to Sharp Thorn and is also closely related to Thorndalo, winner of numerous races down south a few seasons ago. , E. Simmons, tho lightweight jockey, who has been absent from Australia for a long time, arrived in Melbourne recently. Ho intends to ride there. Sinco his departure from Australia Simmons has ridden in England and France, and for more than a year has been one of the most successful riders in Ceylon. In India also ho has had many successes. Simmons broke his jour ney at Perth, where ho rode at the Cup meeting. Among the successes of Simmons were the Caulfield Cups of 1922 and 1923 on Whittier and Wynctte. He was then a 6.7 boy, and in Whittier’s race ho was laid £IOOO to nothing by tho owner, Mr Bon Cbaffcy, chairman of tho Victoria Amateur Turf Club. FOR AUSTRALIA. Tho Wellington Racing Club has received the following entries for events to bo run in Sydney during tho autumn: — Sydney Cup.—Concentrate, Jaloux, Gold Trail, Antique,_ Princess Argosy, Volga Boatman, Inflation, Chock Say, Great Star, First Acre, Tigcrism, Spccdmint. Doncaster Handicap.—Azalea, Gold Trail, Miladi, Princess Argosy,- Volga Boatman, Foreign Queen, Autopay, Inflation, Great Star. Warwick Farm Autumn Cup.—Concentrate, Gold Trail, Princess Argosy, Autopay, Inflation, Great Star, Firstl Acre, Volga Boatman. Liverpool Handicap.—Volga Boatman, Autopay, Inflation. BEAUTIFULLY BRED. Tho Paper Money—Qudrilateral filly which Mr J. S. Brunton, of Sydney, purchased for llOgns at tho yearling sales, has been placed in tho hands of Mrs McDonald at Awapuni to be trained. This youngster is beautifully bred on both sides

of hor family, Paper Money being by Greenback from Epping Rose, and having St. Frusquin, St. Simon and Bend Or blood in his veins. His great grunddam, Lady Blanknoy, was a half-sister to Tristan, winner of tho Ascot Gold Cup and triple winner of the Hardwicko Stakes. Paper Monoy had many successes on tho English Turf prior to being brought to tho Dominion to undertake stud duties, while Quadrilateral, whojis by Square Measure —-Poltara, by Polymelua—Areola, won tho Tliirsk Sessay Nursery Handicap, tho Pontefract Lowther Nursery Handicap and Newcastle Stewards’ Two-year-old Plate prior to being purchased for the stud. Hor granddnm, Ebha, is an own sister to Ladas (2000 Guineas and Derby) and half-sister to Gas (dam of Cioero—a Derby winner), Dark Flight (dam of Night Patrol), Popinjay (dam of Magpie), Uhoroneso (dum of Heroic) and Chelys (tho granddam of Affectation, Razzle Dazzle, Gold Light, Beaoon Light, Speed Light. The youngster has thus aristocratic blood in her veins and it will bo indoed surprising should sho not provo capable of produoing a big measure of tho lamily pace. WOODVILLE JOCKEY CLUB. CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS. The Woodvillo Jockey Club has issued its programme for the autumn meeting to be held on February 22 and 23, and it should receive good nominations from all tho neighbouring districts. Tho Woodville Handicap (one mile and a quarter) , carries a stake of £lls, and the Autumn Handicap (one mile and a distance) on the second day has a stake value of £IOO. The open class sprints are worth £IOO and £9O respectively, while the hack events vary from £SO to £9O. In all, the club is giving away £llBO in stakos —£630 on the opening day and £550 on the second. Plenty of stabling accommodation is available for the visitors, the club having 34 loose-boxes at its town stables and a similar number at tho racecourse. These are being made available at a very low cost.
