RELIEF ALLOCATIONS.
o PROTEST AT GREYMOUTH. Per Press Association. GREYMOUTH, Jan. 25. A large public meeting representing local bodies and unemployed was lield to-night protesting against the inadequacy of the relief allocations. The speakers included the Mayors of Greymouth, R.unanga and Brunner, the chairman of the Cobdeir Town Board, representatives of the county, and unemployed and Labour organisations. A resolution proposed that the meeting “strongly protests against the inadequate relief money in this district, and urging the hoard to make an immediate increase.” The Minister is to be asked to place Greymouth in the same category as the main centres for relief purposes, as the cost of living is far greater than in the cities. It was also suggested that he be asked to review all schemes with a view to removing the hardship of the standdown week, but not at the expense of the other three weeks.
An amendment, however, was carried as follows: “That this meeting make a definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relief work, and in lieu thereof pay sustenance as provided by the Unemployment Act.”
