PETITION FROM RESIDENTS
DRYING OF SKINS AT SHOW-
GROUNDS. Signed, by residents of AValdegrave Street, a petition was submitted to the Palmorston North City Council last evening stating that, with the advent of hot weather, an invasion of blow flies was expected from the sheep skins drying on the Showgrounds, and that tho smell would bo beyond their endurance. Tho city inspector reported that he had made sevoral inspections of the skins now being handled at the Showgrounds, in company with the Government Health Inspector, and that no nuisance was being caused. “I do not think we can do any more than we ha.ve done,” commented the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford). ‘‘The skins will ho under close supervision. Crs J. McLeod and W. B. Cameron reported that they had inspected the skins, which were hung on lines through which a constant stream or fresh air was passing. ‘‘l could not smell anything of a bad nature,” added Cr Cameron. I cannot see what the residents of Waldograve Street have to bo afraid of. Tho Mayor: They are afraid of the wind, I suppose. . ~ “That may be quite all right, stated Cr J. Hodgens, “but we have had no real summer weather until the last three days.” , . It was decided that the grounds should be subject to close supervision by the council’s officers, that inspections be made at least three times weekly, and that the Department of Health’s inspector be kept apprised of the conditions.
