RIVER CONTROL.

MEETING OF THE BOARD. OPERATIONS OF PLANT. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North River Board was held to-day, when Tr. A. E. Mansford presided. Others present were Trustees J. Batchelar, Av. Anderson, W. L. Fitzherbert, G. Tremaine, and J. Hodgens. Mr W. H. Gilmour, who was deputising for the engineer, was also in attendance. An apology for absence was received from Trustee AA r . R. Hopcroft. ENGINEER’S REPORT,

The acting engineer reported on the activities of the month as under: “Old race course: The construction of No. 4 .Regulation groyne is still in porgress, one span being completed and two more front piles have been driven. Unfortunately for this work there was a fresli in the river and it was impossible to carry on the constructional work for some days. All the piles are in readiness for driving, and good progress is now being made. No. 2 plant has during the past month been engaged in the work of hauling logs from the river channel for booms for No. 4 regulation groyne at, the old racecourse; a sufficient number for this work have now been obtained and plant is engaged in getting timber tor extension of the groyne at the Esplanade. A good number are required for this work, but sufficient should be obtained within the next few days. The plant will then proceed upstream above the bridge to get the balance of the timber required for groynes at Eitzroy diversion channel. Several small freshes have occurred during the past month, the highest recorded being 4 feet 6 inches above summer level on December 9. The willow plantations still continue to show excellent growth, and all river works are in a satisfactory condition.” —Adopted. The following statement of accounts was presented : —Expenditure to December 16, £2806 18s; credit balance at March 31, 1932, £97 16s 4d; receipts to December 16, £I6BO 12s 9d; balance, dr. £IO2B 8s lid. The statement of rates showed : —Rates struck during the year 1932-33, £2311 18s lid, less payments to date, £584 7s 4d; outstanding, £1727 11s 7d. Amount oustanding at April 1, 1932, £564 Os lOd less payments to date, £2ll 16s 3d ; outstanding, £352 4s 7d. —The report was adopted, it being decided to impose the 10 per cent, penalty on and after June 14. GENERAL. The acting engineer reported that some person or persons had been cutting willows on the river bank behind the Esplanade.—lt was decided to take action against the offenders. At the conclusion of business the chairman took the opportunity to extend to the members and staff the compliments of the season. The speaker added that the past year had been a difficult one and the' approaching year did not promise to bring with it any material improvement and it behoved everyone to take united action to overcome the position.
