HIGH STANDARD NECESSARY. ROTORUA, Dec. 17 Expressing his disagreement with the view held liv some people that too much monev was spent on education, . I)r. E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, sfieaking at the prize-giving ceremony of the Rotorua High School, said lie considered it to he the most important of the Government services as a necessity for the future welfare of the country and the solving of the problems which beset it. Dr. Marsden said what wa.s wanted, was a new outlook on the changed conditions and a realisation that, with proper training, the industries of the country could be successfully controlled l>v its own people. He said that if the present system of democratic government of the Dominion was to function successfully the standard of education must necessarily be high, as in its actions the Government was directed from outside and guided by the wishes of the voters. Successful leaders were necessary for this form of govern- ! ment and it was only by education that. these could he provided. 1 Tn concluding, Dr. Marsden said he ; felt that industhv and education conld not be linked ton closely and that too much deflection of the best youth away from industry was taking place.
