CARNCOT SCHOOL

SPORTS AND PRIZE-GIVING. A bright sun favoured the annual sports and prize-giving at Carncot School yesterday afternoon. There was a very good attendance of parents and friends, and the children acquitted themselves extremely well in the various sport items. All the events were keenly contested, and everything was conducive to a good afternoon’s entertainment. The results were as follow : —3OO yards open: Basil Evans. 100 yards (senior): M. Runnicles. 50 yards (senior): M. Runnicles. 100 yards (junior); M. Sheppard. 50 yards (junior): M. Sheppard. Hopping (open): M. Sheppard. Junior high jump: M. Sheppard. Books balancing: M. Radcliffe. Senior sack race : G. Hankins. Senior high jump: D. Woodward. Potato race (open): G. Hankins. Wheelbarrow race (open): N. Hickson and M. Teulon. Tortoise bicycle race (open): E. Teulon. Egg-and-spoon race (senior): D. Woodward. Egg-and-spoon (junior): P. Winter. Suck race (junior) :M. Sheppard. Three-legged race (open) : M. Runnicles and J. Moore. Obstacle race (open): M. Radcliffe. Consolation (open): Tere Christian. Visitors’ race: V. Bryan. Old girls’ race: B. Russell. Old boys’ race: l l ’. Sheppard. Following the races, an adjournment was made to the spacious classroom, which had been decorated with choice blossoms, where the prize-giving took place. Prior to tlie presentation, the children, under the direction of Mr J. Holmes Runnicles, sang very pleasingly two Christmas carols, and a German and an English folk song. Samples of work done by the children were on display and revealed much promise and talent. Delicious afternoon tea was served, the girls making attentive little waitresses. Addressing the assembly, Rev. C. Hyde congratulated the children on their delightful school. “When you leave,” he said, “I hope you will all carry on the great spirit.” Whatever school one attended, said' Mr Hyde, it should bo regarded the very best, and one to be proud of. He hoped they would all do something for the school, for a true school spirit was something greatly to be desired. The children attending Carncot, he continued, were very fortunate in receiving individual tuition, and they would go far under the teaching of Aliss Dudding, who was never tiring in her wonderful sympathy and interest.

A pleasant little interlude took place, when Miss Dudding and Mrs Hickson were handed sweet posies by little Margaret Sheppard, on behalf of the pupils, who also gave Mr Runnicles a handsome pipe and tobacco pouch. Mrs Hickson, whose daughter has spent the longest term at Carncot, was then called on to present the prizes, as follow:- —Scripture: Senior, D. Woodward; junior, M. Teulon. Arithmetic and algebra: D. Woodward and J. Cunninghame; arithmetic. M. Teulon and J Moore. English: D. Woodward, M. Radcliffe, M. Sheppard. History and geography : D. Woodward and M. Sheppard. Latin and French: M. Runnicles (Mrs Woodward’s prize); French only, G. Hankins. Nature study and hygiene: M. Runnicles. Nature study and drawing: M. Sheppard. Sewing: M. Runnicles, J. Cunningham, E. Teulon. Drawing: N. Hickson (Mrs Radcliffe’s prize). Form S.A: D. Woodward (Mrs Hickson’s prize); Form S.B. M. Radcliffe (Mrs Woodward’s prize); Junior, M. Sheppard (Mrs Cunningham’s prize).' Progress: M. Teulon, B. Evans, J. Burns, Z. Whitehead, T. Christian, E. Teulon. General knowledge: M. Runnicles and M. Sheppard. Prefect’s, prize: N. Hickson. Swimming Cup: 880 yards, M. Runnicles; 440 yards, M. Radcliffe. The Sydney Cup, donated by a parent, was awarded to M. Runnicles, the senior sports champion, and the Monrad Cup went to M. Sheppard, the junior champion. The Sheppard Cup was won by M. Sheppard, for junior high jump, and the Seifert Cup for senior high jump, by D. "Woodward. Rev. Canon Woodward, on behalf of the parents, thanked Miss Dudding for tne happy afternoon. Miss Dudding had attained great heights in her teaching, and the children were certainly a credit to her. He extended the season’s greetings to Miss Dudding and wished her greater prosperity in the New Year. The afternoon concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
