The running of tramcsirs in Queen Street, Auckland on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve has been authorised. For the past two years tramcars have used Queen Street on these evenings, although other traffic has been diverted by the City Council. A huge whit-taio shark, lOf feet long, and weighing nearly three cwt., was caught by fishermen in Cook Strait yesterday. It is believed to be the first shark of this species to be caught in New Zealand waters, and is remarkable for the huge flukes on its tail. Advertising signs on the Hutt Road reserve are to be banned according to a decision made by the Wellington City Council last evening. The Makara County Council is to be requested to prohibit the erection of advertising signs on private property fronting the portion of the road under its con trol. “Tho future of gold mining in the Dominion appears to carry great possibilities,” said Mr G. C. Creagh, chairman of the Auckland Stock Exchange, at the annual meeting. “Largely as a result of the slump, more attention has been given to gold mining than for many years past, and there has nevep been a more genuine attempt to develop the industry along proper lines, and ivith the introduction of modern and scientific methods of treatment.” That all teaching appointments should bo made to take effect at the beginning of each term was a suggestion from tho Hawke’s Bay Education Board endorsed at this week’s meeting of tho Wanganui board. It was stated that at the present time tho appointments were made at the beginning of the month. As a result of the decision it is expected that the number of relieving teachers will drop considerably, because when one teacher left and the other took over there would be no interim period when a relieving teacher was in charge. Members of the board expressed their appreciation of the move, which would result in less changes in the staffing of the schools. In preparation for tlie festive season, members of the City Council electrical department’s staff were to-day engaged in erecting the hundreds of coloured electric globes which considerably enhance the appearance of the Square and approaches during the evenings. The pupils of the Hokowhitu School have collected a very largo parcel of toys and articles of clothing and it is intended that the Junior Red Cross Circle forward the collection to Miss Lissington, the secretary of the movement in Wellington, for distribution there during the Christmas season.

Fir© broke out in the railway reserve plantation on the FoxtonHimatangi highway, about a mile north of the Foxton boundary on Wednesday afternoon, and did a good deal of damage to young pinus insignis trees recently planted by the Railway Department. Prior to tho pupils of tlio Russell Street School singing their school song at the breaking-up ceremony yesterday afternoon, the headmaster (Mr F. C. Campbell) stated that the late Mr R. Irwin, a former headmaster, had written the words. Mr Irwin had endeared himself to every boy and girl and tho song was a link between the early history of the school and the present day, said Mr Campbell.
