TOWN v. COUNTRY.

DOUBLE CENTURY TO DEMPSTER,

WELLINGTON, Dec. 16. The cricket match between Town and Country was concluded yesterday when Town, in their first innings mado 364, thanks principally to a fine innings by C. S. Dempster. ' The match ended in a draw,, but the honours were with the Country eleven, as they led on the first innings by 71 runs. The Country team largely owed its success to splendid bowling by J. Newman, who onge again proved his worth by sending down no fewer than 47 overs, fourteen of which were maidens, for five wickets and 86 runs. It was his devastating attack in the early stages of the innings which forced the Town players to defence rather than attack. , .

Freeman proved himself a promising slow bowler in capturing three for 33 olf 40 deliveries, and might have been made more use of with advantage. Massey also took long spells at the crease with credit, and would have come out with better figures' had he been better supported in the field. W. Norris, the Country captain, handled the side well, and proved himself quite a capable wicket-keeper by allowing only three byes. Detailed scores are as follow: — COUNTRY. First innings 435 TOWN.
