EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 16, 1902.
The tender for the Palmerston North High School building, about to be erected, was £2228, which did not include the cost of furnishings. The Pokangina County Council, after a lengthy discussion, decided on the ferry sito for the erection of .the new bridge over the Pohangina River. The Minister of Railways had informed the settlers that consideration would be given the matter of appointing a stationmaster at the Oroua Bridge railway station. The first shipment of New Zealand butter to the Transvaal was reported to have greatly outclassed the Australian product lor texture and aroma. Lord Hawke’s cricket team had arrived in Auckland by the Ventura. The team was stated to be good at batting and fielding, while the quality of the bowling varied. The work in connection with the breakwater extension at Timaru bad been interrupted because of a strike of all the quarry hands. .Count Von Billow bad declined the offer of a princeship, reported a Berlin message.
