OROUA DOWNS.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) OROUA DOWNS, Dec. 14. On Monday evening a very largo number attended the annual break-up eoiicert uud dance held in the Bainesse School. Many items were given by the school children, while the Moutuiti Maori Party also contributed items of an entertaining nature. Much credit is due to the teachers, Mrs Gray and -Miss McKenzie, for the splendid way in which they trained the children and for tho organising of the children’s portion of the programme; also to Mr Reliana for the way ho trained the Maori Party. The School Committee wish to thunk him lor arranging that the Maoris could be present. The dance music was supplied by Miss McKenzie (Bainesse) and Mr D. Alvo (Rangiotu), while Miss J. l'Teeman (Oroua Downs) played several extras. Tho items for the evening were as follow: Opening chorus, Maori dancers, The Gavotte, the School; “Knitting” recitation, Bello Dunlord; “Jenny Jones,” chorus by Standards 3 and 4 boys; “Mulbory Btush,” action song by juniors; “Very Early,” recitation by Fanny Legg; “Gentle Spring,” chorus by Standards 5 and 6; “Week Days,” recitation by Standards 1 and 2; “Boney was a Warrior,” song by Jim and Ray Andrews; “Somebody’s Darling,” recitation by Eunice Caske; “All Through tho Night,” chorus by seniors; “Country Life,” recitation by Jean Marcliant; “Nursery Rhymes,” action song by juniors; “Silver Threads,” guitar solo by Eddie Thessman; “They Didn’t Think, recitation by Doris Marchant;. “Little Sicilian Maid,” chorus by Standards 5 and 6; Inc Nut Tree,” 6ong by Joyce and N. lennent “Maori Song,” by Dennis and Jerry Fitzgerald; “Two Little Hands,” recitation by infants; “The Seasons,” song by Betty Ryan; dialogue, by five boys; jhe Watcher,” chorus Standards 3 and 4; -the Blot,” recitation by G. Beaumont and _E. Caske; “Flag of Britain,” chorus by senior boys; “The Harvest,” recitation by J ° a p Legg; “Aloha Waltz,” guitar 6 °*°,, " die Thessman; “Negro Dialogue, lhe Two Black Crows” by three boys and chorus. At the conclusion of the children s programme the. Maori Party ladies gave a poi dance, winch was encored. Tlie other Maori items were a male quintette arm haka song by Mr Takarua, and an exhibition of the Hawaiian hula dance by one of the gentlemen. At the conclusion of the concert supper was handed round by the School Committee. Mr M. J. Ryan officiated as M.C. _ _ A special meeting of tho Oroua Downs School Committee was held on Monday night, when Messrs O. Berg, V. Caithness, V C. Egers, R. 11. Hobbs, E. W. Thompsoh, and J. B. Bennett (headmaster) were present. Arrangements were mad» tor tne break-up concert. The selection of tlle prizes for the children was left to Mr Bennett and the nuinbor to be procured is 104. Messrs Hobbs and Eggcrs are ~t o- , out the duties of doorkeepers while Messrs Caithness, Thompson and Hobbs are to arrange for transport, of children and parents who reside away from the school and hav o no way of attending. .. An Oroua Downs entry, Lionel Funnel! s Nigger Minstrel, won second prize at the group competition of tho calf club held a Rongotea on Wednesday.
