CENTRAL SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Central School Committee was held last evening, Air AV. G. Black presiding. Others present were Alessrs A. E. Kerslake (hon. secretary), R. Tait, G. H. Jarrett, C. E. Taylor, J. Robson and AV. Garden. Apologies for absence were received from Alessrs Gordon and Cameron.

The headmaster (Air E. Bary) ported that all the examinations had been completed. The attendance had been exceptionally good, the average being 759 out of 784 during the past five weeks. The engraving of trophiesl was in hand. The Municipal Library l was to be thanked for making available books and reading material during tho year, an action that was greatly appreciated. The ladies’ committee and all others who ha.d assisted were to be thanked for their efforts ini connection with the gala day. The Christmas tree, for which ari expeiiditure of £5 had been authorised, would be held tn-day for the infant children. The school sports, in the form of tabloid athletics, had been exceedingly successful, 384 children competing simultaneously.

The report was adopted. Votes of thanks were accorded those who had assisted at the gala day. The chairman paid a tribute to the work of the ladies’ committee -in arranging and conducting the gala, and stated that the not proceeds of £2l were very gratifying.

The treasurer reported that the cash bank balance in hand was £149 16s 9d, including £43 18s 5d for takings from the baths to date, mainlv produced by 195 scholars’ tickets. The baths revenue for the corresponding period of last year was £2B 2s 3d. The chairman commented that the position could be considered very satisfactory, and it appeared that the budgetary estimates would be realised. The committee had aimed at having over £IOO in hand by the end of February. There were no outstanding commitments remaining to be met. excepting the expenditure provided for in the re-concreting of the grounds. The school would finish up the financial year in a slightly better position than it was at the beginning, and at the same time some permanent works had been carried out.

The chairman reported that the matter of re-levelling and sowing the grounds was still under investigation by the headmaster and himself.
