CONTROL OF GATES

PALMERSTON NORTH SHOWS. RECOMMENDATIONS ADVANCED Recommendations for more efficient control of the gates at future show fixturcs were advanced by the chairman of the gate stewards (Mr W. G. Black) at a meeting of the general committee of tho Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association yesterday. His proposals wero as follow: (1) That the Waldegrave and Pascal Street entrance gates be permanently closed and triple entrance gates with a public turnstile provided in Oakley Street.

(2) That tho motorist’s name and 'll umber of each motor vehicle entering the grounds be recorded at the ent 1 ’” 10 ® gates in order that the motorist s license to enter the grounds may be cancelled should he fail to obey parking regulations. (3) That tho ladies’ tickets granted to members for the Winter and Spring shows be standardised on the lines of the Winter Show tickets, definitely limiting each lady to admissions available on one day or on any day of the show.

(4) That a sub-committee comprising the president, vice-president, treasurer and the chairman of each stock sections, Messrs T. A. Hastings, V. T. Dibble and myself, beset up to consider recommendations 1,2, and 3 and report at the next general meeting. I have added Mr Dibble as chairman of the Citizens’ Committee and secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club. He has considerable knowledge of gate control, ticket and car parking systems.

(5) That tlie stadium charge be permanently fixed at 6d per head except in the case of a special attraction. (6) That the suggestion from the New Zealand Dairy Factory Association, that factory managers be admitted on their invitation cards, be op-; posed, and that the present system of exchanging invitation cards for complimentary tickets on presentation of the cards and identification of the holder be continued. (7) That the west entrances to both grandstands be closed and no gatokeepers provided. This would dispense with the services of four men and on a basis of 7 days’ Show per annum would save £24 10s in wages. The total takings at the recent Spring and Winter Show at these entrances were substantially less than tho amount paid in gatekeepers’ wages. Observations were made by the chairman of the gate stewards as follow: (1) That further efforts be made to obtain the support of the city shopkeepers to close on two half-days. This was done satisfactorily in 1924 and 1926.

(2) Tha.t it is inadvisable to continue the Spring Show for four days when tho stock is not on the ground on the fourth day, uniess there is some striking ring attraction on the fourth day. Tho expenses of such day are not justified by tho support extended at the re. cent Show. (3) That the former time-table of closing at 5 p.m., re-opening at 7 and closing again at 10 p.m. be reverted to. At the recent Show the hours observed were closed, closed. 5.30 to 7, finally closed 10.30 p.m. Public comments and results did not seem to justify this departure. (4) That no permits be granted to any individual or any society to sell art union tickets either on the ground or from any stall. The association depends upon the good will of its patrons and the public who come to see the Show are irritated and annoyed by the frequent demands on them to buy tickets. The president (Mr M. A. Eliott) congratulated Mr Black upon his report, and it was decided that a subcommittee should be set up as recommended.
