SEALING OF ROADS.
FOXTON HARBOUR, BOARD’S REQUEST. TO MANAAVATU COUNTY COUNCIL. The Manawatu County Council was moved to considerable amazement and no little amusement at its monthly meeting yesterday, when a letter was received from the Foxton Harbour Board asking the council to consider, at its earliest convenience, the sealing of the Sanson-Himatangi, the Hima-tangi-Rangiotu and the Foxton-Mana-watu Heads Roads. The board thought all these works were of an urgent nature and should be the first undertaken by the council. “At the very moment the board was arriving at this resolution Mr Bond (county engineer) and myself were interviewing Mr Sharpe, the district engineer, in AVellington, and endeavouring to get some money to have the Rangiotu-Himatangi Road sealed,” stated the chairman (Cr AV. E. Barber) following the reading of the letter. Air Sharpe, the speaker continued, had been over the road and agreed that it required attention, but it was quite another matter getting the money to do the work, Cr Barber added. The engineer: AVe were asking Air Sharpe for a modest £20,000, while the work the Harbour Board wishes us to do will cost £91,0C0. Cr J. H. Perrett: The amusing part of the matter is that there were two members of Parliament present at the board meeting when that motion was carried, yet they, knowing the condition the county is in at the present, supported the resolution. The council decided to reply stating that it had no funds to undertake the work required at preesnt.
