AVOIDING CUSTOMS DUTY.
PENALTIES COLLECTED IN BRITAIN.
Received December 13, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 12. Over £150,000 was collected in Britain in 1932 from amateur smugglers endeavouring to conceal dutiable goods, principally jewellery, liquor, tobacco, perfume and silks. Baggage has been so thoroughly examined since the wider imposition of duties that smuggling is decreasing. Only flagrant cases are taken to Court. The offenders, mostly women, are often ordered to pay double the duty.
