THIRTY YEARS AGO.

HIGH SCHOOL SHOOTING.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” DECEMBER 9, 1902.

The Palmerston North town clerk had been advised that the Government intended to refiftid the sum of £2OO which had been spent locally on the Coronation celebrations. The Premier (Rt. Hon. R. J. Seddon) had announced that the Government would pay freights and attend to details if farmers of the Colony would contribute fodder for Australian farmers whose lands had been affected by the drought. The Government aid to local bodies had decreased considerably over a period of years. In 1887, subsidies and grants totalled £320,000, in 1897 they were £178,000 and in 1901 the amount was £168,000. Hon James Carroll, Native Minister, had given his assurance that, if the Maoris were willing, he would use his best endeavours to have Maori hospitals erected in various parts of the Colony. Viscount Kitchener was engaged in manoeuvring 37,000 British and Native troops between Ambara and Delhi in preparation for the proclamation of King Edward as Emperor of India.
