LOSS OF TIME.
OBJECTION MADE
Per Press Association. ' INVERCARGILL, Dec. 8. ; Some 200 relief workers from the Duck Creek scheme assembled outside I the Labour Department’s offices this morning and marched upstairs and 1
! insisted on seeing the officer in charge. | ! Their grievance was that they lmd i this morning' gone to Duck Creek to ; commence work, but on account of the ! rain had been ordered to return home. I They asked that they be paid for the day, pleading that they would suffer hardship otherwise, ' particularly in view 01 the proximity of Christmas. - Later representatives of the men met Messrs Weenink (Labour Depart-
ment) and Pearce (Public Works Department) and following a brief discussion Mr Pearce suggested that for this one time they should be paid as if they had worked to-day and make it up next week. In future, he said, they would work?excess time, say a day a week, and have that'in reserve to offset wet weather. The deputation appeared to be fairly well satisfied with this arrangement.
