FOXTON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Dec. 8. A successful garden party, under the nuspicos of tho Presbyterian Church, was held ut Mr and Mrs A. Stovenson’s residence, Park Streot, on Tuosday aftornoon. Tho function was oponod by tho Mayor (Mr M. E. Porreau) who struck an optimistio note in his opening romarks. Ho stated that thoro was u very bright futuro ahead of Foxton and residonts could safely say that tho cornor had been turned. An enjoyablo tiuio was spoilt during tho afternoon. Vooal numbers woro contributed by Mrs W. Ivl. Thomas. Competitions wore won ns follow: —Golf, Mrs R. M. Pnrkes; nail driving: Mrs Nockles; fishing, Miss F. McKenzie. Tho stall holders wore as follow :—Cake, Mesdames W. Ross, S. Easton and D. R. Barron; sweets Miss J. Stevenson; work stall, Mrs R. M. Parkes and Misses A. and B. Speirs; produco, Mosdames Vv'oodham, Satherloy and McEwen. Tho tea rooms woro in tho charge of Miss Stevenson nnd Mesdames Jno. Ross, Knewstubbs, East and Baird. Tho competitions were controlled by Mesdames J. Symons and J. M. Thomson, Miss Littlejohn acted as door-keeper. v A confirmation service was conducted at All Saints’ Church, Foxton, on Tuosday evening in tho presence of a large congregation, by tho Bishop, Rl. Rov. Dr. Sprott. Tho candidates, ten in number, were presented by tho Rev. G. A. Young. At the annual congregational meeting of the Foxton Presbyterian Church thoro was a good attendance of members, presided over by Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A., moderator, of Palmerston North. Tho annual report, presented by the inanagors, showed that tho church was in a very satis factory position, tho balance-sheet, despite the depression, showing receipts only £2O less than last yoar. Tho report and the balauco sheet were adopted. The annual reports nnd bulanco-shcets of the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild and the Bible Class showed that these branches of church activity woro also in a flourishing condition. The moderator congratulated the church on the nature'of tho reports and commented on the fact that tho occasion was the last on which a report would bo receivod from the church no a single unit. He expressed his pleasure at the manner in which the Fox'ton and Shannon charges had amalgamated and made reference to the very fine spirit which hod prevailed at tho recent meeting of representatives at Shannon when the matter had been finalised. It was decided to forward a leter to tho Foxton Methodist Church thanking Messrs P. J. Mails, J. Chrystall and A. G. Huntley for the assistance they had afforded the church in helping with services'. The board of managers was re-elected with tho addition of' Messrs T. R. Botty and Edwards. A voto of thanks was accorded to Mr J. L. Christie for his services as auditor and it was decided to 1 ask him to continue in that capacity. Mr D. R. Barron paid a tribute to the work of Mr Leishinan a-s minister of the combined charge and said that the congregation was fortunate in having a man of this type connected with tho church. The moderator endorsed Mr Barron’s remarks. Mr Jas. Ross moved that the hour of tho evening service be altered to 7.30 during the summer months. Mr Barron opposed tho move on various grounds and after a good deal of discussion it was decided by a small majority to adhere to tho present hour (7 p.m.). Miss M. Yorko, of the Wellington Training Collego, is holidays with her parents, Mr and Mrs G. F. Yorko, of Union Street. Miss F. McGee, of Wellington, is the guest of Mr and Mrs G. King, of Norbiton Road. Mr A. Murphy, of the Wellington Training College, is spending tho vacation with his parents, Mr and Mrs E. J. Murphy.
