IN THE HOUSE

GOOD PROGRESS MADE. SECOND READINGS OF FOUR BILLS. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 24. The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, is well satisfied with the progress made by the House of Representatives to-day and called it a day lialf-an-hour before the usual time for adjournment. The afternoon sitting was devoted to receiving reports from select committees. Most of these concerned individual petitions and the House displayed little interest in the findings, but attention quickened when a committee advised the Government to delay until there was an improvement in the financial conditions the reinstatement of a grant for kindergartens. A move was made by the Opposition to have the- matter referred back to' the committee for further consideration, but the House endorsed the committee’s finding by 37 votes to 21. • In the evening the House accorded second readings to the National Expenditure Adjustment Amendment Bill, flbe Mortgagors’ and Tenants Further Relief Bill, the Municipal Association Bill and the Municipal Corporations Bill. As the latter measure had only been circulated a few minutes before the second reading, Opposition criticism was rather restrained and the Minister announced liis intention to delay the Committee stage until memhers had been able to study the 393 clauses and thirteen schedules which the Bill contains.
