EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD.” NOVEMBER 25, 1902.
The town was very crowded for the general election. It was stated that there was an unusually large number of lady voters. During October there were 2994 arrivals in the colony and 1152 departures, as compared with 1191 and 1238 respectively in October, 1901. Speaking in St. Paul’s Cathedral, London, Canon Sinclair paid a remarkable tribute to the late Rev. Hugh Price Hughes, a leading evangelist of the Methodist Church. An Ottawa message reported that it was proposed building a grand trunk railway from North Bay, Ontario, to Port Simpson, British Columbia, at a cost of 90 million dollars. The death was announced from Berlin of Herr Krupp, the gun inventor, tho Kaiser having telegraphed his sympathy to the relatives. There were 45,000 men employed in his works. A message from Pekin advised that the Japanese troops had evacuated Shanghai.
