PERSONAL.

Mr C. W. Kent, who has been town, clerk of Oamaru for 25 years, will retire at the end of this month. Mrs L. A. Abraham left to-day for a short holiday and will be staying with her daughter in the Wairarapa. The death occurred at his residence in Masterton, yesterday of Mr S. .1, Smith, District Public Trustee, aged 46 years. Friends of Mr A. H. Shelton, who is still an inmate of a private hospital, will be pleased to learn tin t his condition shows a slight improvement. Rev. W. A. Sinclair, general secretary for the Methodist Foreign Missions for New Zealand, is to retire after 41 years’ service in the ministry. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse, of the Police Department, resumed duties this morning after a fortnight’s leave. During his absence Sergeant Culloty has been relieving him.

The Rev. G. T. Beale, L.Th., vicar of Stratford, has been appointed canon of St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton, by the Bishop of Waikato on the nomination of the greater chapter and standing committee. The late Mr Charles Rhodes, of Auckland, whose death was announced yesterday, -was, with Sir George Fowlds, responsible for the formation of the Palmerston North Rotary Club and presided over the first meeting, subsequently evincing keen interest in it. Rotarian F. J. Nathan, the foundation president, at a meeting last evening paid a tribute to the late Mr Rhodes’s work, and on his motion the dub accorded his relatives a vote of sympathy.

The death has occurred at Marton of Mr John Henry Frederick Benseman, a well-known settler of the Apiti district. Born in Upp>er Moutere, Nelson, 69 years ago, Mr Benseman later lived in the Waituna- district before taking up land 36 years ago in Apiti. He married Miss O’Reilly, of Akaroa, who predeceased him in February of this year. The deceased gentleman was of a very quiet disposition and took no active part in public life but was hghly esteemed by all who knew him. Mr Arthur Benseman, of Apiti, is a nephew and Mesdames E. Thomas and Pentney (Hunterville), H. Clare (Waituna), Messrs J. Benseman (Bay of Plenty), E. Benseman (Upper Moutere) are the sisters and brothers of deceased.
