INDUSTRIAL LAW.
DEFEAT OF LABOUK MOVE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. Oct. 13. Resuming the debate in the House on the introduction of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill (Mr J. McCombs), Hon. A. Hamilton declared the spirit of conciliation was quite evident in industrial disputes to-day.
Mr P. Fraser said the country was in for a period of industrial turmoil. It was possible to force people down, but it was impossible to make them surrender. Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates said the Labour Party had been wrong when it forecast that the country would come to a standstill when the Act was amended and now it was annoyed about the inaccuracy of its forecast. The Labour Party’s allegation* about “sweating’’ were absolutely inaccurate. The country would not stand for “sweating” conditions being imposed upon people. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr H. F.. Holland) said the smaller unions might have accepted the situation created by last session’s amendment but only because of their inability to make any effective protest. The economic conditions were all in favour of the employers. After further discussion n division was taken on the motion to introduce the Bill and the motion was defeated by 42 to 29. those voting in favour beiiitr the Labour members and .Messrs H. Atmore, G. C. Black. A. ,T. Stallworthy. A. M. Samuel, E. T. Tirikatene, C. A. Wilkinson and R. A. Wright.
