Preparatory Division : Marie Fisher, 84, honours. First Steps Division: June Hammond, 87, honours; Kathleen Garard, 84, honours. Initial Division : Nola Sutcliffe, 82, honours. A report on the cost of stringers and decking for Kensington Road bridge was presented to the Borough Council on Monday evening by Or A. Mclndoe, and a tender of £9l 13s was accepted. With wages and the bituminising of the surface the total cost will be in the vicinity of £l3O. Work will commence as soon as the materials are to hand.

Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., presided a,t a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning. On the information of the traffic inspector, E. H. White was charged with using false number-plates, and also with using an unlicensed motor vehicle, no third party insurance on motorcar, and failure to keep register as hirer of motor vehicles. Defendant pleaded guilty to all the charges and was fined 20s and costs 13s for failing to keep a register, £2 and costs 10s for using false number-plates, and £2 and costs 15s for using a half-ton truck without a license. W. B. McKenzie, for permitting the use of an unlicensed motor vehicle, pleaded guilty. He was convicted and fined 30s and costs 10s. J. L. Gibbs, for driving a lorry after dark without lights, and driving without a license, was convicted and fined 20s on each charge, and costs totalling' 245. W. Cribb, for having an inefficient hand-brake on his car, was convicted and fined £3 and costs 15s.

The Maxton District High School Committee met on Tuesday, the chairman (Mr H. J. Fowler) presiding. There were present Messrs H. Wysocki, W. Campbell, R. Gill, L. Williams, W. F. Eade, H. Frederick, E. Fletcher, R. C. Witney, and the headmaster, Mr H. L. Wilson. The balance-sheet of the recent fancy dress ball showed a credit of approximately £ls, which was considered very satisfactory. The visiting committee, Messrs Fowler and Gill, reported very favourably on the appearance and condition of the school and environs.' The committee decided to purchase crockery for the use of the Ladies’ Welfare League, and the chairman was authorised to consult svith them as to requirements. Messrs Campbell and Wysocki were appointed a visiting committee. The headmaster reported, inter alia, that the attendance had been exceptionally good, an average of 95 per cent, being maintained during the month. The health of the children was excellent.

The second cyole rood race under the auspices of the Marton Athletic Club was held yesterday, eight riders lining up at the start. R. Maiden, off the limit, had a good lead in the first and second rounds and finished first comfortably in 51m n. 45sec. off 14min. 30sec. mark, H. Coles (lmin.) was second; J. Fowler (2min. 30 sec.) third; G. Boswell (lmin. 30sec.) fourth; G. Taylor (scr.) fifth; H. Moss (scr.) sixth; G. Pidwell (4min. 30see.) seventh and H. Payne (lmin. 30sec.) eight. Fastest time. 31min. 45sec., was registered by H. Coles.
