DRAINAGE IN MAKERUA

The Makerua Drainage Board, at its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon, considered at length a proposal in connection with the strengthening of the banks in various parts of the area. A lengthy report was submitted by an engineer, but rvas not released for publication. It traverses the position obtaining at Coley’s Bend, Upper and Lower Whitaunui, Kemp’s Bend and other parts. There were alternative groyne proposals —the expenditure of about £7OOO on 36 permanent groynes, or the construction of temporary groynes. “The decision we make may mean thousands of pounds to Makerua and I do not think we should rush the decision, said the chairman, Mr H. Seifert, when emphasising the need for a considered opinion on the matter. It was eventually decided that the board, together wit'll the overseer, Mr P. V. Tucker and the engineer, inspect the area next Thursday morning. The unsatisfactory condition of the bank at one spot in the Tokomaru Stream was brought before the board s notice by Mr J. A. P. Liggins, who said that the overseer had reported on the matter, but no action had been taken and the bank was carrying away. Members stated that they were under the impression that the work had been executed and unanimously decided to instruct the overseer to have the break repaired.
