THE WEATHER
GENERAL FORECAST. An anti-cyclone of slight intensity is moving on to northern New Zealand. The first wave of a fresh depression is approaching the far south, but the main depression which is centred near Tasmania is a shallow one. ■ Winds light to moderate; south-westerlies prevailing north of New Plymouth and Napier, but elsewhere northerlies. Seas smooth to moderate in New Zealand waters. Light to moderate winds, tending northerly, in the eastern Tasman Sea; seas smooth to moderate. A few scattered showers in western and southern portions of the South Island; otherwise fair to fine. Temperatures becoming milder. DISTRICT. REPORT. PROSPECT OF FINE WEATHER. The Government meteorologist telegraphed to-day:—The indications are for moderate southerly winds, gradually backing by east to north. There is a prospect of fair weather. The barometer shows little movement. MANAAVATU RIVER GAUGE. Noon.--2ft. 6ins.
