MARTON, Oct. 11, The Marton Borough Council met last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) and Crs. Gregory, Barton, Melndoe, Honeymon, Langston, J. D. Gorrie and Sicelyj A circular letter was read from the Health Department with reference to contributions by local .authorities for health inspector's services stating that a reduction of 10 per cent in contributions will operate as from April 1, 1932, and that it is desired to introduce a general arrangement by which contributions will bo adjusted annually reduced or increased proportionately with any reduction or increase in the cost in the respective groups, giving particulars of the proposed method of arriving at percentages payable and asking the council’s approval.—Tho council agreed to the suggestion, provided that contribution does not exceed £6O per annum. The Marton Atldetio and Cycling Club, forwarded an account for grass seod sown on the park and asked ihe council to grant some assistance towards the cost. —lt was decided to take over the unused grass seed. Mr W. S. Nicol wrote asking the council to clean out a drain on the top side of the road to the lower waterworks property and divert the water at present running on to his farm.—The request was granted. Mr F. R. 11. Brice asked the council to sell section 41 or part of same to give access to a bridge site across the Tutaenui ‘Stream striking die Cawood estate in a central position.—The council decided to inspect the site at a date to lie arranged. The overseer reported on general work for the month. The town clerk reported receipts for the month as £942 16s 9d, which included rates £2BO 6s Id, gas consumers £192 Is 6d, Town Hall £B6 Os Bd. Mr J. Walker’s offer to stage an entertainment early in December ill aid qf the Wairoa earthquake relief fund was accepted. Mr K. A. Williams has returned to Marton from Wellington, where be underwent an operation. On Saturday evening a presentation was made by members of the Marton Municipal Brass Band to Mr L. Ingram, a member for some eight years past, who has been transferred to Karioi. A few words of farewell were spoken bv the president, Air A. J. B. Sicely.
On Sunday evening welcome rain foil in Marton after a glorious day, and for a quarter of an hour there was practically a deluge. The rain was confined to a limited area, as no rain fell at Bonny Glen, about three miles from the town. On Saturday, a school cricket match was played between Mount View and Porowa at Porewa, tho former winning by 30 runs on the first innings.
The annual meeting of the Marton Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club was held on Monday evening. Air K. Stevens presiding over a good attendance. The report showed that the year had been a very satisfactory one. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Air R. E. Beckett: president. Mr K. A. Williams; vice-presidents, Alessrs J. Howard, K. Stevens and A. L. Wheeler; secretary. Air R. G. Kingsdon; treasurer, Air 11. Date; club captains, Air K. N. Glasgow and Airs Glasgow; committee, Aliss Glasgow, Miss Wilkie, Messrs C. M. Iloldaway, M. C. FcnvTicke, K. R. Scpon, F. Wood; auditor. Air H. Dow; delegates to Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association, Alessrs A. L. Wheeler and Jv. Stevens. Hie opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 22.
A painful accident occurred to Air Roger Cameron at Turakina, on Sunday, when he was kicked in the face by a horse. The sufferer was attended by a doctor, who found it necessary to place several stitches in the wounds, and also removed him to an hospital for observation. This morning it was stated that bis condition was satisfactory.
