EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD” OCTOBER 11, 1902. A record had been established in connection with the collection of the borough’s half-yearly rates. Of £4200 levied for the period, only £IOO remained outstanding on September 30. The poultry industry in the Mnnawatti was reported to be particularly active, prices in the borough being Is a pair ahead of those in neighbouring towns. At a lengthy meeting the Man,awatu Racing Ciub committee considered 19 plans for a new grandstand, the choice falling on that submitted by Mr J. Charlsworth, of Wellington. It had been decided that troopers who had returned from tho Boer War be given 8000 acres of good quality land between To Kuiti and Awakino, the block to be divided into 200 acre sections. The Blenheim-Seddon railway line had been declared, open by Sir Joseph Ward, who drove the train along the line. An important gold discovery was reported from Kawhia where , lands had been withdrawn from sale by the Government on the ground that they contained minerals. Owing to the increased cost of labour and horse feed, the Wellington city horse tramways had lost £47 on the half-year’s business.
