PAHIATUA, Oct. 10.
Mrs J. F. Redpath, Miss Margaret Redpath, and Mr J. McDonald, of Wanganui, spent the week-end as the guests of Mrs A. D. Donald, Pahiatua. Airs VV. H. Furdie, Tyndall Street, was a visitor to Hastings for the week-end. Miss M. Reese, (Jnristohurch, who is spending an extended holiday with her sister, Mrs H. Cornelius, Mangahao. has been visiting Napier ior a few clays. Mr It. H. Taylor has been confined to his bed for the past fortnight. A bogey competition was played among the men of the Pahiatua Golf Club over the week-end and resulted as follows:—.!. O’Sullivan 1 up, P. Whitehead and P. RBoagey, all square. The warm rains experienced in this district during the week-end have stimulated growth in the pastures and the country is at present looking exceedingly well. Tho monthly meeting of the Pafiiatua County Council was held on Saturday. There were present: Crs Bolton (chairman), Hodgins, Fouhy, Bisset, Horne, Bryant, Lassen, Whitta and Kelson. _ Iho Public Works Department wrote advising that the board approved of an extra of approximately £26/ being paid to tho contractor in order to expedite the completion of the now Alangatainoka River bridge, also an extra of approximately £9l was approved to protect the eastern abutment of the new structure. The extra work incurred jiy the recent flood would bo subsidised on a £3 for £1 basis. Mr T. R. Ebbett drew attention to the state of the Palmerston North Track road leading into his property. He offered to keep it in repair in lieu of paying rates, £6 odd. It was decided to inform Mr Ebbett that when the property owners undertake to keep their stock off the road tho council will consider the matter of repairs. The Mam Highways Board granted a maintenance subsidy of £49 15s Bd, being £3 for £l, for work on tho Mangaone 'Valley-Pahiatua Road. A petition from 36 residents of Mangamutu was presented to tho council. “Tho undersigned residents of the Mangamutu district within tho county ridings of Mangatainoka and Konini desire re-, spocffully to draw attention to the rough state of tho roadway and footpath from tho town bridgo to tho Pahiatua railway station, and tho request is made that if it be found impossible to greatly improve tho road surface some improvement bo mado to tho footpath.” Yesterday tho Pahiatua Motor Cycle and Sports Club held its first field day at the Alangatainoka Domain. Tho weather was perfect and visitors from Palmerston North and Alasterton, as well as tho local motor cyclists, had a most enjoyable time. The club is indebted to Alessrs Adams and Pink, of Palmerston North, for judging. Alessrs L. Parker and F. J. Martin were sports organisers and Alessrs N. Buddon, F. Pawson, L. Hartley, R. Limbrick (Palmerston North), J. Birchall, W. Buddon and F. J. Martin comprised tho ground committee with L. Parkor as starter.
