FORM AT OTAKI MEETING.

It was a meritorious performance on the part of Henry of Navarre to win the Kapiti Hurdles on the opening day at Otaki, for he was giving away varying poundages up to 311bs. Although the Arausio gelding failed on the second day, bis winning efforts have not yet terminated.

Although the hurdlcu at Otaki are usually considered to 1m rather easy of negotiating, there were two falls on ' the opening day t while another fell over through coming info contact with a fallen runner. On the second day Balloon brought his racing career to a close. Since being in the south High Commissioner has paid his way. although his form has not heen altogether consistent. At Marton ho ran third over tho battens prior to going on to win tho Highweight Handicap at Wanganui. When installed favourite on tho second day he failed, as he did nt Otaki on Friday when filling first position in the hotting. Ho reversed proceedings at Otaki for, as third favourite on Saturday, its won.

While there is plenty of objection being raised against the three-dividend system, “Binocular” anticipates that to the general public it will bo very acceptable. Tho man in the game rather objects to the levs of tho five per cent, from the first and second dividend payers which goes to form the percentage, returned to hackers of the third horse, hut to the actual patron of racing—who after all plays a largo part towards keeping the game going—the offer of throe chances will no doubt, ho welcomed. Tho same remark aplies to the two dividends in a field of five horses, and no doubt ♦here were many backers of favourites who were happy to secure the return of a portion of their original investment when the first fancy ran second.

A fine type of hack was seen in the I’uhi Maiden Plate on the opening day. even though he did not win. Pladie. the horse in question, marred his prospects by inability to begin, but ran a great race thereafter to finish second. His connections should not. have long to wait before being credited with a win.

Aitua. who displayed a lot of pace for a period in the Pulii Maiden Plato, is identical with the Lackham— Frivolous mare whom T. Metcalf was acustomed to ride at work at Awopuni for her owner, Mr P. O’Connor, of Palmerston North. The four-year-old now rneos in the interests of Mr H. Cnnnonf, of Otaki.

Br<? Aero was not prominent in tho early riming of the Puhi Maiden. but the Acre Deborah lillv was finishing on at the business end! She was transferred to the hark seven furlongs event on the second day to be narrowly beaton by Farmer for second place. \\ hilo there is not a great deal of her. Bee Acre should make good for Mr \Y. Higgins. A change of class with its consequent difference in poundage brought forth fruitful results where the Arausio filly Aroma . was concerned. On the opening day she finished fifth in maiden company, but with ft stone o(T her back led a useful hack field home on the second day when ranking as the outsider of the field. Fanner is hurdlv living up to the good things oxpectcd of him. for although he has undoubted speed, be displays a tendency to run about. r l he Pombal gelding improved on his fourth of the opening day by running second to Gay Gourt on Saturday. Tho latter put up a great effort on the opening day and his victory was freely anticipated on Saturday. The luck of things is repeatedly demonstrated by a horse winning nt hie first essay in new colours. Just such an illustration was forthcoming in the Katihiku Handicap on the opening day when Lyrical, a cast-off of Mr V. Riddiford’s stable, won at his first attempt for Mr C. Cunningham. Form was somewhat inconsistent where

However, whore the sprinters were concerned there was a direct reversal. While it may he problematical whether Hunters Aloou will prove to hi* worth the big figure which it required to effect liis purchase, the limiting Song gelding evidenced at. Otaki that In* has command of a great turn ol speed and it was unfortunate that running wide should have cost him the stake in the Pahiko Hack Handicap. He should win races, nevertheless, for his new owner when lie arrives in Ceylon, or even in Australia on tho wav.

Reg. Mackio has been looking after Sanguine King ami a Hangitoro gelding for Mrs J. M. Bevan at, Fetlding for the past two months. He has applied for a trainerrider’s license and it was quite mi auspicious start when he rode his new charge to victory iri the Taunianuka Hack Handicap on the opening day. As Mackio had seven years with the R. J. Mason stable nt, Riccarton, he should have the grounding for his new role.

When Crown Area was racing on the Dominion turf he was recognised as one of the best middle distance performers. Now a younger brother in Plateau promisee to carry on tho good work. While not of physique of his elder full-brother. Plateau is a nice type, having plenty of bone. His first apoarance under silk —in the hack distance event on tho opening day— saw him somewhat unlucky to he beaten, and when lie won oil the second day he was at, a very short price.

A great, opportunity appears to have been lost by the connections of Wasteland to have accounted for n decent hack sprint race. At Otaki she was promoted to open company to find it just a little too strong for her. Changed tactics found her filling the unusual role of pacemaker instead of whipper-in and her customary finishing effort was missing us a result. In hack company them might have been a different talc to toll.

The Wellington sportsman. Mr W. 11. Ballinger, is a groat supporter of the game and is more worthy of the title of sportsman than the big maljority. His pensevereneo with certain of his team members is nevertheless surprising, and it is a. wonder that, he has not tired long since of Shoofist. Now a six-yenr-old, Shootist, is still eligible in maiden events. It is all the more pleasing in consequence to see Mr Ballinger enjoying some success in the south with Flower and Purse.
