WORK EULOGISED.
DEPARTING JOURNALIST. SYDNEY, Oct. 10. Mr Hugo Freeth was farewelled by the Sydney Morning Herald Btaffs on leaving to assume the editorship of the Press, Christchurch. Mr Bruusdon Fletcher, editor of the Herald, eulogised Mr Freeth’s fine work and manly character among hi 3 colleagues. He said that while regretting Mr Freeth’s departure, all felt that they should share in the congratulations that their guest was going to edit a paper which had played an important part in New Zealand’s development. It recalled the days of Samuel Butler and the writing of “Erewhon.” Mr Freeth should be able to hold high the ideals of journalism, in which he had been trained, partly in his homeland and during tne past decade on the Herald.
Mr Stuart, the assistant manager, on behalf of the proprietors, added congratulations and regret at the loss of a. fine colleague, countered by the knowledge that he was going to an important position. He would undoubt-■ edly uphold the high traditions of journalism, which he had imbibed dur. ing his stay on the Herald. He had also been prominent in various social acti-* vities connected with the paper, and would be missed by every department. Presentations made to Mr Freeth in-* eluded a painting of Sydney harbour: and library fittings of Australian wood. Mr Freeth, in replying, said Hat ha was overwhelmed by the eulogies. Ha would always recall his association with the Herald as one by which hi 3 training had greatly benefited, and he felt that what he had learned hera would be useful in the work befora Various departments had already farewelled Mr Freeth at a social, aft which presentations were made. .
