MILSON.

(From Our Own Cororspondent.) MILSON, Sept. -29. What proved to be one of the most outstanding social successes of the year took place in the Milson. Hall last evening. The function took the form of a social and dance arranged by the newly formed branch of the Women’s Institute, and tho uncprccedentcd success of their initial venture must havo proved very giatifying to the committee. Over 100 guests were present and a most enjoyable time was spent. Mr F. G. Murphy capably officiated as M.C. A varied programme of old-time and modern dancing was mdulgcd in, being liberally interspersed with vocal and elocutionary items. Artists who contributed items were: Miss Muir, tap dance; Mrs O. Brills, Maori songs; Mr Oppatt song and humorous monologue; Miss Doherty, song; Mr and Mrs Prince, duct; Mr S. Toon, song. Messrs Hutchins ancl Jcromcson gave a very interesting exhibition of thought transference ■ which left the audience bewildered. Mrs Mur-' phy (chairwoman cf the institute) contributed the dance music on the piano, being assisted by an orchestra of several mstruments, whilst Miss Muir played an extia. The prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz i\crc won by Mr and Mrs L. G. Robertson. A waltzing competition was held during tho evening, a fair number of couples competing. Miss Yardley and partner proved tho winners. The standard of waltzing was high, and tho winning couple gave a particularly fine exposition. Mrs Mclvearney, of Palmerston North, was the judge, and her verdict was populary received. At a suitable juncture, Mr Murphy, on behalf of the Women’s Institute, thanked those who by their attendance made the evening a financial success, and specially thanked the artists who had so willingly contributed items. The funds obtained as the result of tho social will place the institute on a sound footing, the expenses in Connection with tho formation of the branch having absorbed the bulk of the members’ subscriptions.
