GOLF TOURNEY

“DEVIL’S OWN” CUP. WON BY H. HUTCHISON. With the decision of the finals in the “Devil’s Own” Cup and Mortgagors’ Relief Stakes competitions, the golf tournament which had extended over three days at the Hokowliitu links, and was confined to members of the legal profession, was brought to a conclusion yesterday afternoon, after some enjoyable matches. There was a bitterly cold wind blowing, • but the course was in excellent order.

The final of the “Devil’s Own” Cup produced an exceptionally keen match which went to the 21st green before H. H. Hutchison (Manawatu) prevailed over J. W. Card (Foatlierston), to whom he was conceding a handicap of 11 strokes. They halved the first hole and Card won the second with the aid of a stroke. After Hutchison’s putt for a win had lipped and run round the hole, they halved the third. Hutchison missed a 4ft putt for another win at Willows, which was halved. Both were in trouble at Strang’s, which Card won with a stroke to lead two up. There was a half at Cliff View. Card won Riverside, where Hutchison drove out of bounds, but landed his second in the bunker at the Bth, which Hutchison won in three. Card won the 9th with a snappy two and turned for home 3 up.

They halved the 10th in fours, but Hutchison .won Land’s End with a nice four, reducing the margin to 2 down. He followed this up by holing in two at Lagoon Hill, but Card won Ti Ti’s with the aid of his stroke, and added another success at, the 14th, Hutchison being in trouble with his second. Card led 3 up with 4 to play, but Hutchison reduced this lead to 2 up at Barraud’s and was only 1 down at the end of the 16th. With the aid of a stroke Card halved the 17th. However, he found the bunker going to the 18th and then over-ran the green. Hutchison stymied him in just tailing with a long putt, and won the hole to come all squarq. They halved the 19th, where Hutchison required to be down in three to keep the match alive, and succeeded. Both wero bunkered at the 20th, which was also halved, but at the long 21st Hutchison holed 5—6 to win an excellent match.

The Hawke’s Bay player, I. Mackie (9), accounted for the Miramar entrant, R. McKenzie (8), 3 up and 2 to play in the final of the Mortgagors’ Relief Stakes. McKenzio was one down at the turn after winning the 7th and Bth. He won the 10th to come all square, but lost Land’s End and halved the 12th. He won the 13th, but lost the 14th, where Mackie sank a beautiful 30ft putt. Mackie won the 15th to lead 2 up and ended the match when he won the 16th with a pretty four.
